Sunflower & Oat Family Photos at Davis Family Farm | What to Wear & Outfit Ideas

Every summer, I get so excited when the sunflower fields begin to bloom at Davis Family Farm in Caledon East, Ontario. It’s one of my favourite times of the year, and I look forward to welcoming both returning and new families for their sunflower family photo sessions.

As a Caledon East and Orangeville family photographer, these are some of my most requested sessions. Between the vibrant sunflower fields, the golden oat field, and the warm evening light, it’s one of the most beautiful places to create timeless family photographs.

Sunflower season usually begins in late July and continues into early August, depending on Mother Nature. Because the blooms only last a few short weeks, sunflower mini sessions at Davis Family Farm book quickly every year.

If you’re planning your family’s session, one of the biggest questions I hear is:

What Should We Wear for Sunflower Family Photos?

The good news is it doesn’t have to be complicated.

My biggest piece of advice…

Don’t choose your outfits just for the sunflower field.

Instead, think about where these photographs will live.

Will they hang in your living room? Your hallway? Above the fireplace?

Choose colours that fit your home and your family’s style. Years from now, I want you to love these photographs just as much as you do today.

Timeless will always win over trendy.

The Best Colours to Wear for Sunflower Photos

The sunflowers are already bright, cheerful, and full of colour, so I recommend choosing clothing that complements them rather than competing with them.

Some of my favourite colours include:

  • White
  • Ivory
  • Cream
  • Beige
  • Oatmeal
  • Sage Green
  • Olive Green
  • Dusty Blue
  • Light Denim
  • Navy
  • Soft Blush Pink
  • Warm Browns
  • Soft Grey

These colours also photograph beautifully in the oat field, allowing us to move between both locations while keeping your gallery cohesive and timeless.

Outfit Tips for Your Family Session

You don’t need everyone wearing the exact same colour.

In fact, I actually prefer families to coordinate instead of match.

Choose a colour palette, mix in different textures like linen, cotton, knitwear, or denim, and let everyone’s personality shine through.

I’d also recommend avoiding:

  • Bright neon colours
  • Large logos
  • Busy patterns
  • Clothing that distracts from your family

The goal is for people to notice your connection not your outfits.

Why I Love Photographing Families at Davis Family Farm

One of my favourite things about photographing at Davis Family Farm is that these sessions never feel rushed.

We wander through the sunflower fields.

We let the kids explore.

We stop wherever the evening light is beautiful.

We laugh.

We play.

Some of my favourite photographs happen when everyone forgets there’s even a camera.

Those tiny cuddles, hand-holding moments, belly laughs, and quiet hugs are the memories you’ll treasure for years to come.

More Than Just Sunflowers

One of the reasons I love photographing families at Davis Family Farm in Caledon East is the incredible variety throughout the property.

Every season the farm creates beautiful areas that make every gallery unique, including:

  • A vintage piano
  • A rustic swing
  • A cozy vintage couch
  • Beautiful walking paths
  • The golden oat field
  • Endless rows of gorgeous sunflowers

These locations give us plenty of opportunities to create a gallery that’s playful, natural, and full of variety.

What to Expect During Your Sunflower Family Session

If you’ve never had professional family photos taken before, don’t worry.

Your children don’t have to sit perfectly still.

They don’t have to smile at me the entire time.

I actually expect them to run, explore, cuddle with you, tell jokes, and simply be themselves.

I’ll gently guide your family every step of the way, but my goal is never stiff poses.

I want your photographs to feel like your family.

You don’t need perfectly behaved kids or perfectly coordinated outfits.

You just need to show up.

I’ll take care of the rest.
