Why I Created Get Out of Auto (And Why Beginner Photographers Need It)

Beginner photography course – Get Out of Auto by The Final Touch

When I first picked up a camera, it wasn’t for family photos.

At the time, I owned a vintage rental company and needed beautiful images of my inventory. I wanted my pieces to look just as good online as they did in person, so learning photography became necessary.

My stepdad helped me get started. He showed me how to use aperture priority mode and explained the basics. Because of him, I had a foundation and that mattered.

However, I didn’t feel the need to fully understand my camera yet.

Everything shifted once I had children.

Suddenly, photography wasn’t about styling products. Instead, it became about freezing moments that felt fleeting. The way eyelashes looked in window light. The way tiny hands reached for mine. Ordinary days began to feel sacred.

But even though I had some knowledge, I couldn’t always get the photo I imagined.

Aperture priority worked until it didn’t.

When my kids moved too fast, my settings failed me. When lighting changed, I felt stuck. So instead of feeling confident, I felt frustrated.

That’s when I realized I didn’t just want help, I wanted control. Its okay sometimes to be in control 😉

From Aperture Priority to Full Manual

At that point, I started searching for answers.

I watched videos. I read blog posts. I followed photographers online. Unfortunately, much of what I found felt overly technical or geared toward styles that weren’t mine, heavy flash, dramatic landscapes, or commercial setups.

I wasn’t trying to become a full-time studio photographer.

Instead, I simply wanted to understand how to use my DSLR in real life.

More importantly, I wanted someone to explain manual mode in a way that felt approachable.

Because here’s the truth: beginner photographers don’t need more intimidation. They need clarity.

As a result, I kept teaching myself slowly and intentionally until it finally clicked.

And once it did, everything changed.

  • Women who may want to photograph families part-time without the pressure of going full-time

In other words, it’s for real life.
