Sunflower & Oat Family Photos at Davis Family Farm | What to Wear & Outfit Ideas
Every summer, I get so excited when the sunflower fields begin to bloom at Davis Family Farm. It’s one of my favourite times of the year, and I look forward to seeing both familiar and new families come out to enjoy the beautiful sunflower and oat fields.
The sunflower season usually begins around the end of July into early August, depending on Mother Nature. It’s a short season, which makes it feel even more special.
If you’re thinking about booking a sunflower session this year, you’ve probably wondered, “What should we wear?”
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated.
My biggest piece of advice…
Don’t choose your outfits just for the sunflower field.
Instead, think about where these photos are going to live.
Will they be hanging in your living room? Your hallway? Above the fireplace?
Choose colours that fit your home and your family’s style. Years from now, I want you to love these photos just as much as you do today.
Timeless will always win over trendy.
The Best Colours to Wear for Sunflower Photos
The sunflowers are already bright, beautiful, and full of colour, so I always recommend choosing clothing that complements them instead of competing with them.
Some of my favourite colours are:
- White
- Ivory
- Cream
- Beige
- Oatmeal
- Sage Green
- Olive Green
- Dusty Blue
- Light Denim
- Navy
- Soft Blush Pink
- Warm Browns
- Soft Grey
These colours also photograph beautifully in the oat field, so if we move between both locations, everything still flows together.
A Few Outfit Tips
You don’t need everyone wearing the exact same colour.
In fact, I actually prefer when families coordinate instead of matching.
Mix together a few colours from the same palette, add some different textures like linen or denim, and you’ll create a look that’s relaxed and timeless.
I’d also recommend avoiding:
- Bright neon colours
- Large logos
- Busy patterns
- Anything that pulls attention away from your family
The goal is for people to notice you, not your clothes.
Why I Love Sunflower Sessions
One of my favourite things about these sessions is that we don’t rush.
We’re not running from pose to pose trying to squeeze everything into a few minutes.
Instead, we wander.
We let the kids explore.
We stop wherever the light is beautiful.
We laugh.
We play.
Some of the best moments happen when everyone forgets about the camera.
Those genuine smiles, little cuddles, hand holding, and laughter are always my favorite images.
More Than Just Sunflowers
Another reason I love photographing at Davis Family Farm is all the little details around the property.
Every year they create beautiful spots throughout the farm that add so much variety to your gallery. Depending on the season, you’ll often find things like:
- A vintage piano
- A rustic swing
- A cozy couch
- Beautiful walking paths
- The golden oat field
- And of course… rows and rows of gorgeous sunflowers.
It gives us so many opportunities to create a gallery that feels natural, playful, and full of variety.
What to Expect During Your Session
If you’ve never had family photos before, please don’t worry.
Your kids don’t have to sit perfectly still.
They don’t have to smile at me the whole time.
I actually expect them to run, explore, cuddle with you, and just be themselves.
I’ll gently guide you the whole way, but my goal is never stiff poses.
I want your gallery to feel like your family.
