A First Child: A Newborn Session in Toronto

Photographing a newborn session is always a special experience, but when it’s for a family’s first child, there’s an extra layer of emotion that fills the room. Recently, I had the honor of capturing such a session in Toronto, and it was one of those moments that remind me why I love being a newborn photographer.
As I arrived at their home, it was clear that everything was perfectly prepared for this little one. The excitement in the air was palpable. The new parents, still getting used to their new roles, welcomed me with a mix of joy, exhaustion, and pure love. There’s something so genuine about the way first-time parents interact with their newborn. Every movement, every touch, is filled with a sense of awe and tenderness.

The Setting: A New World for Everyone
When it comes to photographing a family’s first baby, the session is as much about documenting the parents’ journey as it is about capturing the newborn. I kept the setup simple, using natural light from their large living room windows. I brought along soft, neutral wraps and blankets to complement the calm, soothing environment. The goal was to keep things timeless and natural—just as these early moments are.
The baby was an absolute dream to photograph, peacefully sleeping through much of the session. There’s something so humbling about capturing these tiny details: the soft curls of hair, the delicate eyelashes, and the way a newborn fits so perfectly in their parents’ arms. Those quiet, peaceful shots are the ones I know parents will look back on and cherish for years to come.
The Emotion: A First Glimpse of Parenthood
One of the most beautiful parts of this session was seeing the parents’ emotions as they interacted with their little one. I could feel the pride, the overwhelming love, and a touch of that “new parent” uncertainty as they gazed at their baby. Watching them softly kiss their newborn’s forehead, or gently cradle her in their arms, it was easy to see how much this tiny life had already transformed their world.
I spent time capturing those intimate moments—mom holding her baby close, dad protectively wrapping his arms around both of them. You could see the deep connection forming, even though this journey had just begun. There’s something undeniably special about witnessing the love between parents and their first child. It’s a kind of love that’s raw, pure, and full of new discoveries.

Why First Sessions Are Unique
Newborn sessions for a family’s first child are always some of my favorites to photograph. There’s an incredible sense of wonder in the air. Every moment feels new—because it is. The first diaper change, the first sleepless nights, the first moments of pure joy and amazement that a tiny person can bring. One of my favorite sessions are newborns. I feel so blessed to be apart of this moment in your life.
